Gatti Found Dead in Brazil

Canadian boxing champion Arturo Gatti has been found dead in Brazil in mysterious circumstances. Gatti will be remembered as one of Canada’s greatest boxers and his three fights with Micky Ward will long be remembered.

Canadian Former Lightweight Champion Arturo Gatti was found dead last Saturday in Brazil. The recently retired fighter was renting an apartment at a seaside resort with his wife Amanda Rodriguez. The cause of the death is still not clear but rumours have ranged from suicide to allegations that he was strangled to death by his wife with her purse strap while he drunkenly slept.

The Brazilian authorities like to take their time in such matters and it may be a while before charges are laid. The Gatti family are not surprisingly distraught over the death and are strongly denying suicide as a possibility. Rocco Crispoe Gatti’s brother-in -law was reported saying;
“Why would he commit suicide? Multi-millionaire, have everything to live for, nephews, brothers sisters, just retired.”

There were reports that the former boxer was having a few problems adjusting to retirement but all of those close to him were shocked at the news of his death. Gatti, who was born in 1972 in Italy grew up in Montreal and always considered himself a proud Canadian. His three fights against “Irish” Micky Ward will long be remembered as one of the greatest on ongoing battles in boxing history. The first and the third fights in this epic battle were named ‘fight of the year’ by Ring Magazine. He always put up his hand to fight the best and will be remembered for impressive efforts against Floyde Mayweather Jr. and Oscar de la Hoya.

Boxing referee Gerry Bolen summed the up the gutsy fighter by saying;
“He was a good fighter, he was good to people, never dirtied the game, never gave a black eye to the game”
