Canadian girls look towards a golden Games

The Canadian Women’s hockey team will be short favorites to win back to back gold medals at the Vancouver Winter Olympics.

Canadians will be looking forward to watching our hockey team battling it out in Vancouver for Olympic Gold. Did I just say team? Well I meant teams because our women have an even better chance of keeping the gold at home than the men.

The defending Olympic Champions will be hungrier than ever to defend the title they won back in 2006. The team has just been announced in Calgary and the 21 girl squad looks to have the blend of youth and experience that will see them start favorites. Faces like captain Hayley Wickenherider, Jennifer Botterill, Jayna Hefford and Becky Keller are all seasoned Olympians but they will have some younger girls who will be experiencing the thrill for only the first time.

The overall age of the 2010 team is 26 years, a year younger than the 2006 team. The youngest player is 18 year old forward Marie-Philip Poulin from Quebec.

Head Coach, Melody Davidson is excited about her team’s chances.

“Our country is fortunate to have unbelievable depth in hockey and this is no different in the women’s game. The selection process has been difficult.”

Davidson knows that barring an upset her team will face their arch rival, the Americans, in the gold medal game.
