Ice Hockey in Canada

Ice hockey is the biggest sport in Canada plain and simple. It’s our national sport and nothing gets us going better than a great game of hockey. Why does Canada have such a love affair with the sport of hockey? Well for starters it has been around for a while – it was developed in Montreal in 1875, but it goes far deeper than that. The game just seems to be as Canadian as maple syrup. It’s tough, it’s uncompromising, it’s fast and it’s played on ice. That just pretty much sums Canada up.

The champions of the game are too many too list here. It’s a who’s who of Canadian sporting history. The most notable of them all is the ‘Great One’ Wayne Gretzky. He was the Michael Jordan or the Mohammad Ali of the ice and will always be remembered as Canada’s greatest ever sportsman.

The thing that annoys most Canadians is that we have under achieved when it comes to winning competitions. It has been many cold years since the ‘good old days’ when the Oilers held the Stanley Cup above their heads year after year. Our skaters are the best in the world but our NHL teams consistently come up empty handed. Surely it is only a matter of time before we will see the Stanley Cup back where it belongs.

But there is no denying our passion for the sport. When our national ice hockey team plays it literally stops the nation every time. With the national anthem playing and the maple leaf proudly worn there is never a dry eye to be found.
