Twenty20

One of the popular forms of cricket that originated in the UK is called Twenty20, or T20. It was introduced as an inter-country sporting tournament by the England and Wales Cricket Board in 2003. A Twenty20 game requires two teams, both with a single inning. The two teams aim for a minimum of 20 overs for batting.

A match of Twenty20 should be completed in about three and a half hours. Each inning should last for a period of about 75 minutes. This makes the game similar to other popular team sports. Twenty20 was established to create an energetic form of cricket to make it more attractive to the live audience at the stadiums and to television viewers. However, the ECB has no intention of making Twenty20 replace other forms of cricket. Other forms of cricket are still being played today.

Since the establishment of this form of cricket, it has spread all over the cricket world. The first World Twenty20 game was played in 2007 in South Africa, wherein Pakistan was defeated by India with five runs. In 2009, Pakistan won the finals against Sri Lanka by winning with eight wickets.

In 2003, Twenty20 cricket was officially introduced after the launching of the Twenty20 Cup by the ECB. Its slogan, “I don’t like cricket, I love it”, was adapted from the song ‘Dreadlock Holiday’ by 10cc.
