Cricket in New Zealand

New Zealand Cricket has had its ups and downs in the past. The struggle has always been finding a national team with depth to match the other great cricketing nations. The Black Caps have certainly seen many world class individual cricketers but there have only been brief periods where the side has stood near the top.

The best side New Zealand ever fielded was probably one from the early 80s; a batting lineup featuring Wright, Edgar and Coney and a world class bowling line up including Hadlee, Cairns, Chatfield and Sneddon. Since then there have been players like Crowe, Fleming, Bond and Vettori but unfortunately they have never blended well to create a world class team.

Yet, the future does look bright now as the Black Caps contain a decent group of young kids who show plenty of promise. Add to this is the team’s new corporate support and the Black Caps will get the lift they need to allow this game to take on a new lease of life in New Zealand. 20/20 cricket is also the right brand of cricket for the Kiwis who have always shown their best at the shortened version of the game.
